
How to actually pick the right wattage for your bathroom lamps
I’ve seen way too many projects where the engineering is just… off. You get these tiny powder rooms with massive wattage that turn the place into a sauna and waste a ton of electricity. Or, you’ve got a huge master bath where the lamp is basically a glorified nightlight, leaving you shivering while you dry off. Getting this right isn’t rocket science, but it does come down to the size of the room and where you’re actually standing.
Picking your power
If you’re dealing with a small powder room (under 4 square meters), stick with something in the 400W to 600W range. These little rooms hold onto heat. If you try to shove 1000W in there, you’re just asking for a huge electric bill—and you’ll probably burn out the lamp faster because it’s just soaking in its own heat. For those mid-sized bathrooms (5-10 square meters), you’re looking at 800W to 1200W. But here’s a pro tip: don’t put all those eggs in one basket. Split the load between two lamps. It spreads the warmth across the floor so you don’t end up with one scorching hot spot and a freezing corner. If it’s a big master bath—anything over 12 square meters—you’ll need 1500W or more to actually feel a difference.
The “feel” of the heat
Here is the thing about infrared: it doesn’t heat the air. It heats you. That’s why mounting height is everything. Mount it too high, and the heat vanishes before it hits your skin. Too low, and you’re risking a burn. It’s all about that sweet spot. We use short-wave lamps for a reason. They’re instant. You don’t have to turn them on twenty minutes before your shower to “warm up the room.” You flip the switch, and boom—you feel the warmth immediately. It’s a great feeling.
The trade-off
More power means a faster warm-up, sure. But there’s a catch. Pushing a lamp to 1500W puts a lot of stress on the internal filament and the quartz glass. It’s a balancing act between wanting that instant blast of heat and not wanting to replace the bulb every few months. And please, double-check your wiring and breakers. There is nothing worse than the power tripping in the middle of a freezing January morning because the circuit couldn’t handle the load.
