
Why we put our bathroom lamps through the “steam torture” test
If you’ve ever put a heater in a bathroom or out on a nightclub patio, you know the real enemy isn’t actually the cold. It’s the moisture. Steam and humidity are sneaky. They find the tiniest gaps in a seal, crawl inside, and start eating away at the electrical contacts. We’ve seen too many “waterproof” labels that mean absolutely nothing once the product has been in a real shower for three months. That’s why we run every single batch of our infrared lamps through damp-heat aging tests. Here is the problem with humidity. It doesn’t just sit on the outside of the lamp. It migrates. In a steamy bathroom, water vapor slips into the housing and settles right on the quartz tube and the terminals. This causes oxidation. Even worse, it causes “tracking,” which is just a fancy way of saying electricity starts jumping across surfaces it shouldn’t. If that seal gives way, your lamp burns out or you’re staring at a tripped breaker in the dark. To stop that from happening, we use aging chambers. We basically simulate years of heavy steam exposure in a few weeks. We push these units until they break just so we can see exactly where the seals leak or where the wires start to fray. The struggle with heat and cold. We use specific gaskets and high-temp sealants to keep the water out, but there’s a catch: thermal expansion. The lamp gets scorching hot, while the outer housing stays relatively cool. This constant stretching and shrinking—expanding and contracting—can pull gaps open in the seals over time. Our tests make sure that the waterproof barrier stays tight, even after thousands of these heat cycles. The honest trade-off. Now, look, total waterproofing comes with a price. To get that level of protection, the unit has to be a bit bulkier. It takes up more space, and the internal electronics can’t shed heat quite as fast. It’s a balancing act. You want a high IP rating, but you can’t let the wiring overheat. If you’re picking a fully sealed unit, just make sure you leave enough breathing room during installation. You don’t want “heat soak” ruining your setup. We’ll give you all the data you need so you can wire it up and forget about it.
