
Why Your Bathroom Heater Keeps Dying (and How to Actually Fix It)
Ever noticed how those standard halogen “lamp heaters” always seem to give up the ghost right when you need them? It’s because they aren’t actually built for bathrooms. They hate moisture. Lately, we’ve been moving toward 1500W ceiling-mounted infrared heaters with high waterproof ratings. This isn’t about making the bathroom look fancy. It’s about making sure your heater doesn’t short circuit or rust into a piece of junk because of the steam. The secret is in how it heats. Most heaters try to warm up the air. But in a bathroom—or a gazebo—the air just escapes. You’re basically heating the hallway. An infrared unit is different. It doesn’t care about the oxygen in the room. It sends out waves that hit your skin and the surfaces around you directly. You feel the warmth the second you flip the switch. No more shivering while you wait for the room to “warm up.” Keeping the water out. Here is the real problem: steam. It sneaks into the housing, hits the electrical terminals, and—pop—there goes your heater. We use units with high IP ratings to basically airtight-seal the guts of the machine. The heating element is tucked inside a quartz tube, so if a bit of cold water splashes on it, it won’t crack from the shock. We also use corrosion-resistant alloys for the frame. Rust is the enemy here, and these materials just don’t let it happen. A few things to watch for during install. You’ll wire these straight into your ceiling grid. Most home circuits can handle a 1500W draw, but just double-check that your wiring gauge is up to the task for a continuous load. One heads-up, though. Because these units are so tightly sealed to keep water out, they trap more heat inside the housing. If you mount it too flush against the ceiling, you might actually scorch your ceiling material. Give it some breathing room. Make sure the mounting brackets allow for a bit of airflow, otherwise, the internal thermal cutoff will trip to keep things safe. As long as your voltage matches the 1500W spec, it’s a pretty easy swap for those old, unreliable lamps.
