
How to Actually Warm Up a Freezing Open Space
Let’s be honest: trying to heat a drafty locker room or a transition zone with standard heaters is a losing battle. You’re basically trying to heat the air, and air is terrible at holding onto warmth. By the time the room feels “warm,” the heat has already drifted away or leaked out the door. The second you step under one of these lamps, you feel it. No waiting around for a thermostat to click or for the room to slowly warm up. We use short or medium-wave emitters to make this happen, which basically just means the energy hits your clothes and skin and turns into heat right away. When it comes to setting them up, height is everything. We mount them high to make sure the warmth spreads out over a decent area. The lamps themselves are tucked inside quartz glass to keep the filaments safe, and we usually use a special coating so the heat actually absorbs into your clothes rather than just bouncing off. One pro tip: don’t skimp on the reflectors. We use polished aluminum to push all that heat straight down. If your reflector isn’t angled just right, you’re basically paying to heat your ceiling, which is a total waste of money. Now, there are a few things to watch out for. Radiant heat can be aggressive. If you hang a unit too low, the person standing directly under it is going to feel like they’re baking, while the guy three feet away is still freezing. It’s a balancing act between how powerful the unit is and how high you hang it. And a heads-up for the electricians: these lamps pull a lot of power the moment they kick on. Make sure your breakers can handle that initial surge, or you’ll be spending your afternoon resetting the power line.
