
Getting Bathroom Heat Right (Without Blinding Everyone)
Nobody likes stepping out of a hot shower into a freezing bathroom. It’s a shock to the system. But when you’re picking out heating lamps, you want more than just “hot.” You want something that doesn’t feel like a stadium floodlight is beaming down on you—especially if you’ve got a baby in the house. The trick is in the light. Most basic infrared lamps are blindingly bright because the filaments get so hot. It’s a harsh, white glare that hurts your eyes. To fix that, we use quartz glass with a special coating. Think of it as a filter. It blocks out those aggressive blue wavelengths but lets the warmth slide right through. The result? You feel the heat on your skin instantly, but the light stays soft and dim. No one is waking up squinting. Let’s talk gear. Most of these run on your standard home voltage (220V-240V), usually pulling between 250W and 600W per bulb. One small but huge detail: the connectors. We use R7s or similar snap-in types because they actually stay put. If the connection is loose, you get arcing, and your socket will burn out way faster than it should. Then there’s the glass. We use a specific thickness of quartz because it can handle the “thermal shock.” That’s just a fancy way of saying it won’t crack when you flip the switch from ice-cold to scorching in two seconds. A few tips for the install. Don’t just shove these flush against your ceiling. You need some breathing room. If they’re too close to the ceiling, the heat gets trapped and creates a loop of hot air. Instead of the warmth hitting the floor where you actually need it, it just stays up top. Plus, it’s not great for your building materials. And a word of caution: more wattage means the room warms up faster, but it also puts more stress on the fixture. Just make sure your housing is actually rated for the heat your bulbs are putting out. You don’t want to melt your hardware.
