Here is the truth about IP65 ratings in infrared heaters: they aren’t always what they seem. Most people think a “waterproof” rating means they’re safe. But in the real world, the problem isn’t just a splash of water. It’s the heat. Specifically, that brutal spot where the lead wire enters the heater housing. Most off-the-shelf units just throw in a basic rubber gasket. Simple, right? Wrong. Those gaskets dry out. They crack. They get brittle after a few hundred heat cycles. Once that seal gives up, moisture finds a way in, hits the live terminals, and—pop—you’ve got a short circuit. The slow creep of heat damage It’s a sneaky process. Standard PVC or silicone seals just can’t handle the constant baking. We see this all the time with “commercial-grade” gear where the sealing was basically an afterthought. The sealant shrinks, leaving a tiny gap. In a humid plant or a wash-down area, condensation builds up inside the housing. It creates a little bridge for electricity to jump from the wire to the chassis. The worst part? It doesn’t happen on day one. It happens after 500 hours of work. Just when you think the equipment is reliable, it fails. Doing it the right way We got tired of seeing this happen, so we changed the process. Instead of a cheap rubber grommet, we use high-temp fluorinated polymers and a specialized potting compound. We don’t just “fit” the seal; we bond it directly to the wire insulation. This stops “wicking,” which is when moisture literally crawls along the wire jacket and drips right into your electronics. We also use a pressurized curing process. Why? Because air bubbles are the enemy. Tiny pockets of air act like heat sinks and eventually burst, leaving a perfect little tunnel for leaks to get through. A solid, void-free seal is the only way to keep the internals bone-dry. One thing to keep in mind There is a trade-off here. Because this seal is so heavy-duty, the lead wires feel stiffer. You can’t just yank them or bend them at a sharp angle right where they enter the housing. If you do, you might crack the potting and ruin the protection. When you’re setting these up, just give the cables some breathing room. Use a gradual bend. It takes a few extra seconds during installation, but it means you won’t be replacing a fried heater six months from now.
