
How to Pick the Right Infrared Wattage for Your Bathroom
When it comes to heating your bathroom, bigger isn’t always better. You don’t just grab the most powerful lamp on the shelf and hope for the best. It’s more about finding that “sweet spot” where the power matches the size of your room and how much heat you actually need. We use short-wave infrared because it’s smarter. Instead of wasting energy trying to warm up damp, heavy air, it beams heat directly onto you. It feels like standing in a patch of sunlight on a cold day.
Getting the wattage right
You’ve got to look at the actual space you’re working with. If you’re just dealing with a tiny powder room (under 4 square meters), a 400W to 600W unit usually does the trick to take the edge off the chill. But if you’re stepping up to a full master bath—something in the 8 to 12 square meter range—you’ll want to jump up to 800W or 1200W. Here’s the thing: if you go too low, the lamp has to run way longer to get you warm, which just burns out the filament faster. But if you go overboard? You get those annoying “hot spots” that feel more like a sting on your skin than a cozy glow. The goal is to find a lamp that gets you comfortable within about 5 to 10 minutes of flipping the switch.
Where to put it
Short-wave lamps are pretty direct. They send heat in a straight line, so where you mount them is everything. Try putting the heater on the wall opposite where you usually stand. Just keep in mind that the higher the wattage, the more intense the heat is right at the source. If you try to squeeze a 1500W lamp into a tiny stall, you’ll probably need to move the bracket back a bit. Otherwise, you risk overheating the wall itself.
A quick word on your electrics
More power doesn’t always mean it’s more efficient. Sure, a 1200W lamp warms you up faster than a 600W one, but it puts a lot more stress on your circuit. Before you install, just double-check that your wiring can handle the peak amperage. You don’t want to be shivering in the dark because you tripped a breaker the second you turned the heat on.
